Liverpool secure hard-fought win over Sparta Prague
25th February 2011 - Sigvard Magnus
Liverpool's hard-fought win over Sparta Prague in last night's Europa League football game has won the Merseysiders praise from football manager Kenny Dalglish.
The Reds ran out 1-0 winners in a tightly contested game at Anfield, more memorable for its spurned opportunities than lack of chances to score.
Dalglish explained: "I think the boys deserve great credit for the way they went about their work - for their determination and their effort - to get a result.
"They were superb and the pride they took in themselves and the club was rewarded in the end with a goal."
Liverpool had to wait for their passage to the last 16 to be secured. Dirk Kuyt's head met with a Raul Meireles cross late on in the football game.
The victory was a decisive one, with star players Steven Gerrard, Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll all on the bench.
Both David Ngog and Joe Cole failed to capitalise on their inclusion in the first team for the match, although both came close.
