Press Launch
Last Monday saw the official pre-launch party of Football Superstars at the Sports Café in London’s trendy Piccadilly area. With many of the CyberSports team in attendance, the scene was well and truly set for an evening of wowing journalists from all corners of the media world.
As well as many of the CyberSports London and Nottingham based staff, we were also very fortunate to have with us doghouse and johnmeyer from the forums who were on hand to demo the game as only they can, as well as the tricky task of consuming beer and pies as the day went on.
These two vocal members of the community were joined by CS’ very own Plectrum and thamightyboro to form a team that would play Football Superstars on huge screens in front of over 100 press people throughout the course of the event, showing the immense potential that the game has as well as being on hand to answer any questions that were thrown their way – of which there were plenty.
As the day became evening, and pints and pies were seen off with much gusto, it was time for a football quiz that would reward the winning team with £20,000 of in game advertising within the Football Superstars world, as well as having their own avatars made into FS millionaires.. a prize not to be sniffed at!
With BBC Radio 5 Live’s Mark Pougatch as host and quiz master, the teams (representing an FS club each) included reps from Sky Sports, The Guardian, The Mail, FHM, Metro, and the Associated Press and knew it was not going to be easy. Rounds included the obligatory picture round, a section on WAGS and some very tough general football knowledge rounds, with all quiz teams left puzzled and enlightened by various facts that they had wished they had known before the event.
As the quiz came to a close, the teams tried more and more to ensure it would be their name in lights when the final scores came in, with some accused of using various mobile devices as an assist. Foul play surely ref! After an hour of brain racking, it was the Guardian.co.uk team that came through as winners, earning them the right to have a presence worth £20,000 in the FS world and for each of their avatars to be made into a Football Superstars Millionaire.
Each team member also won a pair of Puma trainers or football boots, kindly donated by FS lead sponsor Puma themselves. While it would be nice to say there were no losers, it was clear to see that this was something everyone wanted to win –after all it is not every day you can test your football knowledge to win such significant prizes.
As the night came to a close, and the place cleared (only to be replaced by a student night), we tidied up and left knowing that the evening had been a huge success and that that media were now well and truly in tune with the game’s concept. All we have to do now, is wait for the coverage to start filling the air waves / broadsheets / web pages and it can be deemed as job truly well done.
CyberSports would like to thank doghouse, johnmeyer, Plectrum and thamightyboro for all of their efforts, as well as The Sports Cafe itself for their wonderful hospitality and 11 Management for the organisation of the event and the smooth running thereof.
