Wickham joins Sunderland from Ipswich

30th June 2011 - Chad Lazarus

Connor Wickham will now play football games for Sunderland, after completing a move from Ipswich Town.

The 19-year-old was signed for an initial fee of £8.1 million and has been one of England's most highly-regarded young players since making his Ipswich debut only 11 days after his 16th birthday.

Speaking to SAFC TV, Wickham said: "I've seen the set-up here, which is amazing, and I can't wait to get started playing football.

"Once the fee was agreed and I met with the manager, he told me all about the club's ambitions and I was sold."

Wickham also played for England in the recent Under-21 European Championships in Denmark, alongside other young stars such as Daniel Sturridge and Phil Jones.

Sunderland have also let go of two of their own youngsters, as Michael Kay and Robbie Weir have signed one-year deals with Tranmere Rovers after they were released in recent months.
