Houllier leaves Aston Villa
2nd June 2011 - Berko Tau
Football manager Gerard Houllier has departed Aston Villa by mutual consent after joining the club in September 2010.
He was unavailable for the team's last five games of the campaign due to a dissection of the descending aorta, which was discovered in April. Doctors have also advised the Frenchman that he will need more time to recover.
Houllier said: "My health has improved considerably since I was taken ill on April 20th. I now intend to take the next few months to concentrate on recuperating fully before I may return to football."
He also thanked Aston Villa's fans as well as supporters of other teams, who he says have offered genuine concern and encouragement during his illness.
Assistant Manager Gary McAllister took charge of Villa during the last five games of the 2010/2011 season, when he helped to guide the team to ninth place in the league in a run that included wins over Arsenal and Liverpool.
