Essien could be out of action for 'up to six months'

12th July 2011 - Sigvard Magnus

Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien will not be able to play football games for up to six months after a new injury setback.

The Ghanaian international injured his knee in training last week and underwent surgery this Monday (July 11th) to repair a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus.

It was a successful procedure, but Essien's full recovery could take up to six months.

Commenting on the injury, Chelsea football manager Andre Villas-Boas told the club's website: "Everyone at Chelsea wishes Michael well for his recovery. His team-mates and all the staff and I look forward to helping him return to playing as soon as possible."

Essien's injury follows the news that Chelsea have appointed Michael Emenalo as the club's new technical director.

He will lead the team's international and domestic scouting network, while helping to support the technical programmes at its academy.
