Feature 9: Music

One thing we’ve not told you a lot about so far is the music used in Football Superstars.  A ton of work has gone on behind the scenes from Monumental’s resident rock god and occasional audiovisual expert Andy Gibson and we’ve had the pleasure of partnering with some fantastic bands to put together the FS soundtrack.

In the shops, nightclubs, and bars of Alexander Bay and Clarkswater you’ll be hearing tracks from Brand New Bad Idea, Waxed Apple, Deadbeat Descendent, Jameson Yeah?, and Delays!

When he’s not providing the aural element to Football Superstars, Andy Gibson goes Jekyll And Hyde to become Brand New Bad Idea, influenced by the likes of Stereolab, Half Man Half Biscuit, Go Team!, Jane’s Addiction, Queens Of The Stone Age, Girls Aloud, crop circles, and ice skating.  This multi-talented musician has even had his work featured at the London Film Festival.  The bottom line is the dude’s called Gibson – it doesn’t get any more rockin’ than that!

Waxed Apple began with experimental, improvisational live shows featuring eclectic samples, live drums, a turntable, and a violin with more pedal loops and effects than you can shake a bow at.  With the recent addition of a bass player, Waxed Apple’s sound has evolved into a bass-heavy groove with electronic instruments ranging from drums to Atari and Commodore 64 consoles!  Waxed Apple have played at Guilfest and Glastonbury as well as gigs in Austria and Hong Kong.  They’ve also supported !!! and LCD Soundsystem.

Deadbeat Descendent boast riffs and rhythms that would turn Alex Kapranos green with envy.  Hailing from Brighton, Deadbeat Descendent have spread their “punk and roll” across the UK as well as France and New York.  They have established a well-earned reputation as a fantastic live band, entertaining to the point of transfixing their audience.  We’re delighted to have their witty lyrics and nimble guitars in Football Superstars.

Graphic designer by day, DJ/producer by night, Jameson Yeah? has been captivating London’s clubbers and techno-geeks with his unique brand of off-kilter dance music.  Inspired by acts like Daft Punk and Squarepusher, Jameson has spent five years experimenting and finding his own styles and techniques.  Consciously difficult to pigeon-hole, Jameson Yeah? bridges gaps between dub, techno, hip-hop, and electronica with references to everything from reggae to gypsy folk.  The blend of atmospheric, emotional, upbeat, and sexy tracks has seen Jameson Yeah? featured in a number of films.

Delays are the best band you’ve never heard of.  It’s a crime that their three stunning albums are yet to trouble the peak of the charts and we sincerely hope that the inclusion of five of their tracks in Football Superstars will help to get Delays into your head and perhaps even onto your iPod.  Those of you playing already will have heard a snippet of what they’ve got to offer with “Are You Ready?” playing while you create your character, but just wait ‘til you hear the rest!  Expect tracks to get Alexander Bay and Clarkswater dancing, from Southampton’s finest (move over, Craig David).

A lot of thought, time, and effort has been put into the music for Football Superstars and we shan’t be stopping here.  The eagle-eyed among you will have noticed the addition of a concert stage near the Fretsby Clubhouse not too long ago – we’ve got big plans!
