Cesc Fabregas signing was fair, insists football manager Wenger

16th February 2011 - Alma Shera

Arsenal football manager Arsene Wenger has hit back at Barcelona over his club's capture of Cesc Fabregas.

The Spaniard signed for Arsenal when he was 16, with the Gunners using the rules to obtain the player from Barcelona's youth system for nothing.

With Barcelona now facing a fee in the region of £50 million to get him back, former president Joan Laporta accused Arsenal of "fishing" for their players, and said it was "justice" that they re-sign him.

However, football manager Wenger accused the club of double standards, illustrating that Barcelona collect the best players from all over the world to fill their academy.

He said: "Where do they get their players? Where does [Lionel] Messi come from? Barcelona? At what age did they take him? Twelve years old.

"There's no reason for any bitterness because we did nothing illegal. We did not force a gun somewhere."

The row is sure to add some extra tension to the sides' football games in the Champions League, the first of which takes place in London tonight (February 16th).
