Brad Friedel turned down Liverpool 'to battle for No1 jersey at Spurs'
10th June 2011 - Sigvard Magnus
Brad Friedel snubbed an offer to work under Liverpool football manager Kenny Dalglish because he did not want to become a number two goalkeeper.
The 40-year-old signed for Tottenham Hotspur earlier this week on a free transfer and has admitted that he turned down a return to Merseyside because he did not want to be a backup for Jose Reina.
Friedel said that he believes that accepting a place as No2 would have "effectively been signing my retirement".
"I like what I heard coming out of Tottenham, they are a club on the up and it's well documented that had I moved to Liverpool it would have been as a No.2," he added.
Arsenal had also hoped to secure the American shot-stoppers signature, as a replacement for their long-term No1 prospect Wojciech Szczesny, who is currently injured.
His decision to join Spurs will leave Gunners football manager Arsene Wenger facing yet another goalkeeping dilemma at the start of next season.
