Barcelona are champions of Europe

31st May 2011 - Sigvard Magnus

FC Barcelona have been crowned winners of this season's Champions League after beating Manchester United 3-1 in Saturday's (May 28th) final.

Held at Wembley, the game was expected to be a cagey affair, but goals from Pedro, Lionel Messi and David Villa clinched a conclusive win for the Spanish champions.

Wayne Rooney scored to make the game 1-1, but Manchester United did little to threaten Barcelona afterwards. Ultimately, the English international's goal was the only shot on target for football manager Sir Alex Ferguson's men.

Speaking after the victory, Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola said: "Once again I want to express my gratitude and admiration for these players and to everybody who has contributed to what we have done once again. We've all achieved this."

Even Sir Alex Ferguson heaped praise on Barcelona after the tie, with the Scotsman labelling them the best team he has ever faced.

He added that Barcelona had given his team "a hiding".
