Real Madrid director sacked

26th May 2011 - Alma Shera

Real Madrid director-general Jorge Valdano has been relieved of his duties at the Spanish club after a board meeting at the Bernabeu stadium.

A disagreement between Valdano and the club's football manager Jose Mourinho was reported earlier this season, which derived from Mourinho's desire to sign an extra striker.

Real Madrid president Fiorentino Perez said: "We have decided to end the contractual relationship with Jorge Valdano."

Perez also explained that Mourinho demanded "autonomy" and that a reorganisation had to be completed.

After being sacked, Jorge Valdano said that he had not spoken to the Real Madrid manager for a "long time".

He also noted that his responsibilities with the first team had decreased in recent times.

Real Madrid finished the 2010/2011 La Liga season in second place this campaign, after recording 92 points, which was not enough to surpass Barcelona's total of 96.
