Villa lining up Martinez appointment?
9th June 2011 - Sigvard Magnus
Wigan football manager Roberto Martinez may be set to join Aston Villa, as the Midlands club have been given permission to speak to the ex-Swansea boss.
The Spaniard is highly-rated by many Premier League followers after guiding Wigan to safety this season while attempting to play a stylish brand of football.
In an interview with the Daily Telegraph, Wigan chairman Dave Whelan said: "They [Aston Villa] wrote to me asking for permission to speak to Roberto. He was on holiday at the time and I granted Villa permission."
Whelan continued by saying that he would be "very surprised" if Martinez opted for the Villa job and asserted that the coach has "never let him down".
Aston Villa have been in the market for a new manager since Gerard Houllier departed the club earlier this month.
It was widely speculated that Mark Hughes could be the team's new boss, though appointing Martinez now appears to be the Midlands club's priority.
