Sunderland sign Craig Gardner from Birmingham

1st July 2011 - Sigvard Magnus

Twenty-four-year-old midfielder Craig Gardner has agreed to play football games for Sunderland FC.

Gardner has arrived at the Stadium of Light from Birmingham City, where he finished as the club's leading scorer last season with ten goals. He has signed a contract at Sunderland until summer 2014.

Speaking to SAFC, Gardner said: "It's unbelievable, to be honest. As soon as it came out that Sunderland were interested in me it was a no-brainer.

"I've heard so much about Steve Bruce, his backroom staff and how good a chairman Niall Quinn is."

Gardner also noted that Sunderland are a massive club and have ambitions that match his own, meaning that the move was "too good" to turn down.

Sunderland have been very active in this summer's transfer market, with the signing of Connor Wickham confirmed earlier this week.

The 18-year-old joined from Ipswich for an initial fee of £8.1 million.
