Scott Parker in wonder recovery to help Hammers to emphatic win
28th February 2011 - Chad Lazarus
Scott Parker recorded a man-of-the-match performance to help lift West Ham United out of last place in the Premier League, overcoming an injury in a 3-1 win over the unpredictable Liverpool.
Parker was unable to walk 24 hours earlier after he fell on his shoulder five minutes before the end of training, leaving him in extreme pain and unable to move easily.
It was so bad that West Ham football manager Avram Grant revealed that he didn't think the leading midfielder would even be on the bench, never mind score the opener after 22 minutes.
Grant said: "Scott is a special guy. The spirit he showed was great. Three hours before the game, we thought there was no way he would play.
"It was a bad, bad injury. He couldn't walk or move his arms. He needed more than an injection but the medical department did brilliantly with him. He's the type of player I like: he always gives 100 per cent [and] is always positive."
Demba Ba would make it 2-0 to the Hammers going into half-time. An unlikely Liverpool comeback could have happened following Glen Johnson's goal to make it 2-1, but the home crowd celebrated emphatically after Carlton Cole fired home a third in injury time to make it 3-1.
