Rooney escapes punishment from FA in elbow storm

It looks like Wayne Rooney will not miss any football games despite a clear incident involving Wigan Athletic's James McCarthy on the weekend.
During the 4-0 romp over Wigan, Rooney ran down the pitch to catch up with the action on the other side of the field. On his approach, McCarthy, who was in plenty of space away from his teammates, suffered what appeared to be a totally unnecessary glancing blow from the England striker's elbow.
While McCarthy did not make a meal of the challenge despite being blindsided by the blow, Wigan fans booed Rooney throughout the tie.
Wigan football manager Roberto Martinez said: "The referee told me at half-time that Rooney had just clipped James and it did not warrant a red card, but if you see a replay it is clearly an elbow and Rooney was very fortunate to escape a red card."
"It was next to nothing," said United football manager Sir Alex Ferguson. "[Referee] Mark Clattenburg saw it and said it was an accident."
Since then, Clattenburg said that he saw the incident and believed it to be an accident. "The FA have decided not to punish Wayne Rooney over the elbow," noted the Times' Ben Smith. "Incredible."
Rooney is known for lashing out in the past. In 2009, Rooney had apparently lashed out with another elbow against Stoke player Abdoulaye Faye, though escaped punishment.
