Sunderland bid £8m for Connor Wickham
23rd June 2011 - Sigvard Magnus
Sunderland football manager Steve Bruce is believed to have put in an £8 million bid for Ipswich Town starlet Connor Wickham.
The 18-year-old striker showed great form last season and has been linked to a number of Premier League clubs including Tottenham and Liverpool.
Sales of Darren Bent and Jordan Henderson by the Black Cats are believed to have left the north-east club with spare cash going into the new season - and Bruce clearly believes the youngster has what it takes to perform in football games at the highest domestic level.
The football manager has every confidence he can put together a formidable side for next season's league.
He told the club's official website recently: "We've been planning and preparing for months, but the early part of pre-season is when people tend to be on holiday, which slows things down.
"Rumours fly everywhere and we've already been linked with something like 50 players."
